MILWAUKEE, WI (Jan. 17, 2025) – The Motorsports division at Briggs & Stratton is excited to announce new ignition coils with enhanced tech inspection features for the 2025 racing rule set. The new coils, both Senior and Junior, have proven to equal the performance of the current coils which eliminates the need for racers to change over. Aside from the coils, the only other significant change to the rule set incorporates a new rewind and cup assembly for improved engagement.
“Growth in the sport throughout the 2024 season proves that the 206 community is united and durable. As the factory caught up on the order backlog and eliminated shortages by year’s end, we were also completing an exciting shift to our new coils with enhanced tech inspection capabilities,” says Dan Roche, Director of Motorsports, Briggs & Stratton. “The new coils have been in development for over two years and have been proven on the track and on multiple third-party dynos to have equal performance both on and off the rev limiter.”
The January release includes the following updates:
Ignition Coil – Section 30
A new LED light will blink a specific color when run to confirm the potted circuitry for a given class’s rev limiter. For the standard 206, the light blinks green while the Junior 206 coils have an LED light that blinks yellow. This feature will provide tech officials instant confidence that the correct coil is being used for a given class.
Rewind and Cup – Section 33
While the previous cup and rewind system had virtually no issues, a supply chain transition requires new engines to use a new cup and rewind. The benefit of the new system is an all-metal engagement of wear parts. The drawback of this change is that the new system is incompatible with the previous system. Cup and rewind compatibility and service part numbers are featured in the new rule set update.
Security Seal – Section
As indicated in the 2024 rule set update, the hologram seal is no longer eligible for competition after January 15, 2025. This means that the entire 206 community is running with engines that can be validated in the Seal Database using the serial number on the orange seal.
Valve Springs – Section 23
A new corrosion resistant coating has been specified for current and future production. Geometry and materials remain unchanged but the coating color is now a non-tech item to eliminate the need for a mass changeover.
